Fitness Wearables Are Great | But THEY Shouldn’t Dictate How you FEEL
The fitness wearable market is a 26 billion dollar behemoth. The devices keep getting smaller, the data continues to get more granular and people across the world (hopefully) are taking action! Using this information to drive healthy change in their lives!
AND THAT IS AWESOME!
But, is there a point where the data provided from these “Health Accountabili-buddies” may do the exact opposite?
Picture this… you purchase a piece of this new age technology and instantly become hooked. It’s providing daily activity, sleep and recovery data in the palm of your hand each and every morning. It’s become a staple in your morning routine, possibly even a game.
After a month you start guessing what your scores will be, churning with anticipation to open up the app and check your subjective feel against the objective data.
It’s Fun!
That is… until you start taking the game a tad too seriously. Each morning your scores disappoint a slight sense of shame unconsciously flows through your body.
“What the Hell?” You think…
All of a sudden the Energy that normally accompanies you on your daily ventures has dissipated. How you subjectively feel is irrelevant, the data says “It’s not your best day” and That’s That!
Alright, let’s step out of our little scenario. As you saw, in a quick sequence of an “imaginary month” you went from an ambitious health seeker to an over-obsessed data scientist. The tools didn’t change, you didn’t change (that much), but the internal value that YOU were placing on those numbers skyrocketed.
The main message here is…
FEELING > NUMBERS
You’re in the driver’s seat, use the data you get from these wearables to learn more about your body and how it responds to the different environments it’s in…. BUT DON’T let these numbers dictate your day.
