Microplastics in Your Chewing Gum? Here’s What it Means For Your Health
If you’re like me and never once wondered where the magical chewiness of the typical mouth distracting stick of gum came from… You may be surprised to hear that it’s not exactly natural.
In fact, it happens to be one of the undercover darlings of the plastic industrial complex. Often being crafted from a synthetic rubber petroleum-based polymer, with some added flavors and ingredients to make it entertaining.
Which makes ya wonder when new studies come out claiming to find significant amounts of microplastics in human organs (like the male gonads) and byproducts like stool, if the chew is worth the Longevity squeeze?
Now, it’s important to note, gum alone has certainly not been the sole driver of us humans increasing plastic production from an estimated 1.5 million annual tons in the 1950s to a whopping 400 million annual tons today.
But, with nearly 50% of the population being casual chewers and with estimates of microplastic particles detaching from a single stick being in the mid-hundreds to low thousands. It may be worth exploring a few options to mitigate this potential “right in our face” risk… Don’t ya think…?
Here are some ways to do just that….
