It seems the more modern science looks into it, the more evidence there is explaining why after 50+ million years of primate evolution, sleep hasn’t gone anywhere.
That is a BIG feat for a daily activity that sends an organism into a state of unconsciousness, leaving them totally vulnerable to predators and threats. Because for 99.9% of history that was the case. There were no houses, locks, ring doorbells and security systems. Organisms were on their own. Implying that this “Sleep” thing must be rather important for Biological Business.
And go figure, it is! As the further we travel down the sleep “rabbit hole” the more we understand that sleep is the bedrock for all biological function as we know it. An essential activity which when deprived, sets the body up for cellular dysfunction, and eventually, an early demise.
Something that is seen highlighted again when it comes to the function of the critical cells that make up our blood vessel walls, the endothelium. Setting the stage for the number one killer of adults on this beautiful floating rock, Heart Disease.
But as always, and luckily, we have the power to re-write our biological story…
