The Hidden Link Between Mitochondria and Heart Disease
Listen, all of our vital organs are important, that’s why they’re called “Vital”. That being said, if I had a magic button that would give one of my choosing the ability to stay young and efficient forever…. It’d have to be the Heart.
Simply because, once the nutrients stop flowing, every other organ is all but toast.
And with this great responsibility of non-stop pumping, it only makes sense that our heart cells have a higher number of energy producing mitochondria compared to any other cell type, accounting for roughly 30% of total volume. Making these little organelles a rather important component in the overall function and efficiency of said Heart.
Which makes the reality that they tend to become weak, leaky and damaged as we age, due to a mix of sub-optimal lifestyle habits and normal aging, a not so great thing for the organ we never want to stop.
In fact, recent research has suggested that this connection between the mitochondria and heart may run much deeper than the heart itself, affecting the health and function of the 60,000 miles of blood vessels running though our body.
And since cardiovascular disease is still the #1 killer for adults in the western world, it’s probably a good idea to do things that put your heart and vascular system in a position to live long and beat strong. An outcome that is proving to be near impossible without healthy mitochondria.
Here’s why, and what you can do about it…
