How to Hold-On during the Holiday Sugar Rush
Most of the food we eat is quickly broken down in the high-acidity environment of the stomach, then absorbed there and in our small intestines. But fiber survives this entire process and makes its way to the colon unscathed, where it’s feasted upon by resident bacteria of the large intestine. Consequently, the more fiber we eat, the more energy we can provide our microbes, and the more abundant and diverse they become. Our microbes then, in turn, do all sorts of good things for us—like help us digest certain foods, regulate our metabolism and blood sugar, and maintain a healthy weight. Research suggests that the healthiest gut microbiome is one full of a diverse flourish of flora, so it follows that high doses of fiber help keep us healthy.
Almost there, a few more days and you’ve hit New-Year = New-Me territory. Good News – The new diet starts in 2 days. Bad News – it only takes a few days (like the week between Christmas and New Years) of sub-par choices to throw your microbiome out of wack. After about 3 days of poor eating and low fiber intake your gut lining begins to weaken, making you more susceptible to some bad microscopic hombres. The MVP here is “Fiber”, your “good” microbe community strives when its fed foods high in fiber, good bacteria create a stronghold in your gut, reducing inflammation and providing health benefits across the board(learn more about your gut microbes).
Even in the midst’s of this holiday sugar siege you can maintain your gut health by eating your fair share of fruits and veggies alongside those 27 cookies(low estimate).
Plain and simple – Mucho Fiber = Happy Gut
Get Creative….Sprinkle some broccoli on your Cheesecake, maybe some chocolate celery fondue…idk I’m just spit-balling some ideas here. Jokes aside, majority of Americans don’t get enough fiber, if your one of them I’d strongly advise you to start getting after it. You’ll feel better, be sick less, sleep better and smile more…..and probably lose weight (but who cares about that). You see athletes (who need to stay healthy for a living) leaning more and more on plants, this isn’t a trend, its a movement. Join it and reap the benefits or stay on your same schedule of getting sick, battling obesity, lacking energy and catching the depression bug. At the very least its worth a 2 week test trial.
