Why You Should at Least TRY OUT Being a Morning Person
“5 More Minutes….”
“Why Are you doing this to me?”
“There’s Gotta be some other way!”
Ahh, that ever so pleasant conversation you have with yourself every morning, as you flail your arms, in hopes of causing severe harm to that default melody projecting from your smart companion (aka cell phone).
A tradition like no other, each morning, right on cue. Why are mornings so Hard! Is it just Me? I bet it’s something in the water!
I can tell you this, I’ve bounced around the continental US quite a bit, and have seen the same emotionless, zoned-out, zombie glares on the Subways of New York, the trolleys of San Fran, and even on the open fields of Sooner Nation (Oklahoma). Vegas seems to be the exception here, but that’s because clocks are just decorations in that parallel universe.
See, I know about this zoned-out zombie persona because I’ve previously played the role, just like you! Resisting the morning until the very last second, then of-course, rushing to Not Be Late! Such a beautifully ironic, broken system.
And by the time we return from our daily endeavors, cognitive resources depleted, we EAT, SLEEP and Repeat.
This far-too-common story isn’t putting anybody in a position to WIN, it’s solely putting you in a position to Get By.
I think We Can do just a tad Better, Don’t You?
So a few years back I embarked on a Journey to optimize my mornings, to dedicate (what I feel is) the most creative and focused part of my day on Me. Of course, this is an ongoing process (as it should be), comprised of continuous tuning and tweaks. But the Key principles remain the same:
- Consistent Sleep/Wake Cycle (aka wake up and go to bed at the same time)
- Hydration
- Movement
- Light
- Presence
So here’s my morning, it works for me, it allows me to “DO ME” before the world wakes up and starts poking me with a stick. Please keep in mind I didn’t just wake up one morning and start doing all this, it takes time. I’d also advise building your routine off the principles rather than each exact detail. For example, your 10-Burpees could be 20 jumping jacks, your exercise or meditation could be a 20-minute walk. The important thing here is the fact that YOU are working on YOU, so go at your own speed. And…
Make it yours! Because that’s who it’s ultimately serving – YOU!
P.S – MAKE YOUR BED!
